Karlsruhe, Germany

Karlsruhe (German pronunciation: [ˈkaɐ̯lsʁuːə]; population 288,917 in 2007), once the capital of Baden, lies in the south west of Germany, on the northern flank of Baden-Württemberg. Situated adjacent to the mighty river Rhine, the city reaches north west where it meets the border of the Rhineland-Palatinate, and west to France. The climate is very pleasant - its location in the Rhine plain makes Karlsruhe Germany's second warmest city.

Founded in 1715 as Karlsruhe Palace, the surrounding town became the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany (Bundesverfassungsgericht) whose decisions have the force of a law, and the Federal Court of Justice of Germany (Bundesgerichtshof) , the highest court of appeals in matters of civil law and criminal law. It therefore considers itself the home of justice in Germany, a role taken over from Leipzig after 1933.

University of Karlsruhe

The University of Karlsruhe, also known as Fridericiana, was founded in 1825. It recently merged with Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe to form the new institution, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

It is located in the city of Karlsruhe, Germany, and is one of the most prestigious technical universities in Germany - it is recognized as one of the leading research universities.

Many famous people graduated at the university and made many great discoveries like, for example Karl Benz the inventor of the automobile or Heinrich Rudolf Hertz who discovered the electromagnetic waves and after whom the SI unit of frequency, hertz was named.
